Following another comprehensive victory on Saturday against high-flying East & West Hendred, Steventon are now within a win of second place with a game in hand on the top 3. We've now managed 5 wins on the bounce in league and cup, allied to a couple of victories for Satish's Wednesday night outfit we have set the platform for a successful season.
A great deal of the success this year is down to the increase in playing membership to over 20 registered players. Selection has been incredibly difficult this year with key contributions and competition for places meaning some playing members inevitably end up disappointed at lack of playing time. We are fortunate, however, that we have Wednesday team and also our neighbours Harwell have been able to accommodate players on a Sunday.
This being said, there is a groundswell of opinion that we are at the stage where we need to look seriously at running a second team next season. In an environment where many clubs are finding it difficult to sustain two teams it speaks volumes for our club that we are in this position.
This matter was discussed at committee on Sunday night and unanimously agreed that we should start the ball rolling to make our intentions clear to the league. I'm positive that this is a wonderful opportunity to further establish our club and grow the membership and I'm sure it will be a success. However, the reality is that we will all need to work hard to recruit more players; we estimate that a playing membership of around thirty would be required to run 2 Saturday teams and a Wednesday night team.
We will have more details on the proposal which we will communicate to the membership as soon as we are able but it's an exciting time and one I hope everyone embraces.
Faringdon 2's at home on The Green on Saturday... hope to see you down there!
